Lawmakers Target FanDuel’s Celebrity VIP Videos

US lawmakers, including Senator Richard Blumenthal and Representatives Paul Tonko and Valerie Foushee, are scrutinizing FanDuel’s VIP program, particularly its practice of sending personalized celebrity videos to customers, amid concerns that these promotions might reach individuals with gambling issues. The inquiry follows a previous incident involving a video featuring Philadelphia Phillies star Bryce Harper, sent to a customer claiming significant losses while betting with FanDuel.

In a letter sent to FanDuel CEO Christian Genetski on October 6, the lawmakers requested copies of the personalized videos and details on how recipients were selected. They noted that FanDuel had sent approximately 30 such videos over the past two years, which the company described as loyalty gestures. However, lawmakers expressed concerns that these perks could encourage further gambling among vulnerable users.

The new letter demands detailed information about each video, including the betting history of recipients and if any had attempted to limit their gambling. Additionally, they want insight into how each VIP customer was chosen and any safeguards against promoting gambling to those showing signs of financial hardship.

Moreover, Congress is investigating the extent of each celebrity’s awareness regarding the promotional use of their videos. After Harper stated he was unaware his Cameo video would be part of a FanDuel promotion, the relationship between athletes and sportsbook marketing has come under greater scrutiny.

Lawmakers are also examining FanDuel’s responsible gambling practices, asking for clarification on how the company identifies potential gambling problems among customers and whether those indicators influence the distribution of promotional materials, including the personalized videos. FanDuel has previously stated its responsible gambling measures apply to all customers, including those in the VIP program. The latest deadline for FanDuel to respond to the lawmakers is October 20, emphasizing ongoing discussions about the implications of sportsbook VIP programs on gambling behaviors.
