A technical issue affected the U.K.’s national air traffic controller, NATS, on Monday, causing significant travel disruption and prompting renewed calls for the resignation of its chief, Martin Rolfe. The problem, fixed at the Prestwick center in Scotland, led to cancellations and delays of flights in Scotland, Northern Ireland, and northern England, with at least 200 flights affected so far.
Travelers, like Nikki Ferguson’s family, faced stress and uncertainty, with their long-planned trip to Disneyland Paris disrupted. NATS stated that this issue is unrelated to a recent software glitch that resulted in over 2,000 flight cancellations two weeks prior.
Airlines have expressed outrage over the recurrent technical problems, with Ryanair calling for Rolfe’s resignation and emphasizing the need for better air traffic control systems. EasyJet and British Airways also criticized the ongoing disruptions, highlighting growing frustrations among passengers.
The U.K. government, which holds a 49% stake in NATS, acknowledged the difficulties faced by travelers following these incidents.
