Michigan Hunters Struggle with Doe Harvesting: Education and Cultural Changes Necessary for Effective Herd Management

Michigan hunters excel at harvesting bucks but lag in doe harvest. Only 20% of hunters are harvesting does, compared to higher ratios in states like Iowa and Ohio. This imbalance impacts deer management, requiring at least 35% annual herd removal to maintain stable population levels.

To address this, Michael Ketelaar of the National Deer Association emphasizes education, access, and changing the hunting culture. Early doe harvest can improve conditions for other deer and reduce agricultural damage. Programs like Hunt Michigan Collaborative assist by connecting hunters with land opportunities.

Proper doe management is crucial for herd health and agricultural protection. Increasing the percentage of hunters who harvest does could significantly benefit Michigan’s deer population and farming communities.
