Northrop Grumman to Provide New Prototype Satellite for Space Domain Awareness

Northrop Grumman to Deliver GHOST-R Space Prototype

DULLES, Va – Sept. 18, 2026 – Northrop Grumman (NYSE: NOC) has been awarded a contract to develop a prototype for the Department of War Innovation Unit’s (DIU) Geosynchronous High-Resolution Optical Space-Based Tactical Reconnaissance (GHOST-R) mission. This initiative expands Northrop Grumman’s involvement in cost-effective commercial space systems and builds on their successful Geosynchronous Space Situational Awareness Program (GSSAP).

Key Highlights:

  • Satellite Development: Northrop Grumman will utilize its ESPASat-L platform to build the satellite and will integrate optical payloads from TRL-11 in Irvine, California.
  • Accelerated Timeline: The operational GHOST-R prototype will be assembled, tested, and delivered to the U.S. Space Force within a condensed timeframe of 24 months.
  • Enhanced Space Domain Awareness: By leveraging operationally proven platforms, the project aims to accelerate space domain awareness and enable the swift deployment of future spacecraft constellations.

Expert Insight

Ryan Tintner, VP and GM for Space Superiority at Northrop Grumman, stated: “Space is becoming more congested and contested every day. By rapidly fielding this prototype, we’re enhancing the nation’s ability to detect and understand activities in geosynchronous orbit, ensuring the protection of critical space assets.”

Additional Details

The GHOST-R satellites will enhance monitoring of space objects, battle damage assessment, and identification in geosynchronous orbit. This project falls under DIU’s “Kill Web” portfolio, which integrates AI technology to enhance situational awareness and operational capabilities against adversaries.

Northrop Grumman’s ESPASat-L, comparable to a small suitcase, allows for a modular and cost-effective approach to space. The forthcoming GHOST-R prototype will augment existing space domain awareness systems, supporting hybrid constellation architectures for the Space Force.

Assembly and testing will take place at Northrop Grumman’s facilities in Dulles, Virginia, and Gilbert, Arizona.

Northrop Grumman positions itself as a leader in aerospace and defense, consistently striving to deliver innovative solutions that enhance protection and connectivity worldwide, while pushing the boundaries of exploration in space.
