Tom Cruise and Alejandro G. Iñárritu Discuss “Digger” at the Academy Museum

Tom Cruise Reflects on His Journey and the Ambitious Film ‘Digger’

At the Academy Museum’s David Geffen Theater, Tom Cruise shared insights on his successful career, stating, “I was very successful since I was a kid.” Following a screening of Digger, he expressed his continuous quest for bigger challenges. “OK, the door’s open. Now I want to push it again,” he said.

Digger, directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, showcases Cruise as a Texas oil tycoon grappling with the fallout from an environmental disaster, all while embodying a humorously intricate narrative. With a hefty $125 million production budget, the film emerges as Warner Bros. navigates its content landscape.

At 64, Cruise takes an audacious leap with Digger, reminiscent of his prior offbeat roles in Magnolia and Tropic Thunder. However, the film’s tone has sparked divisive reactions among critics, with some reviews being harshly critical. Despite this, the ambition behind Digger has been acknowledged as invigorating.

Iñárritu provided candid insights about the film’s challenges, particularly the balance between theatricality and authenticity. He noted that what felt inspired during filming didn’t always translate effectively in post-production. “We were laughing all day,” he recalled, highlighting the complexity of achieving the film’s intended tone.

Discussing Cruise’s acting precision, Iñárritu remarked on his ability to make meticulous decisions akin to his high-risk stunts, emphasizing Cruise’s presence and natural observation on set.

Cruise expressed admiration for his co-stars, describing Sandra Hüller as “extraordinary.” His enthusiasm was palpable as he highlighted the collaborative essence of filmmaking. He underscored a broader perspective on audience expectations, advocating for the value of “handmade” films. “People want to see real things,” he mentioned, implicitly addressing contemporary debates around artificial intelligence in media production.

By the end of the discussion, Cruise acknowledged that the sustainability of his craft relies on audience support. “My hope is always that the films would do enough,” he said. Despite the uncertainties, he embraces the joy of creativity in filmmaking. After engaging with fans, Cruise demonstrated that even after four decades in the industry, he continues to seek new experiences and remain deeply passionate about his work.
