BMW is investing around €2 billion (about $2.34 billion) to modernize three sites in Bavaria for the production of the eighth-generation 3 Series. This investment is primarily allocated to its Munich and Dingolfing plants and a new battery factory in Irlbach-Straßkirchen. Munich will focus on assembling the all-electric i3, utilizing locally sourced batteries, while Dingolfing will manage combustion and plug-in hybrid variants.
This strategy maintains the 3 Series across both electric and combustion drivetrains, with Munich transforming into an electric-exclusive site using the Neue Klasse technology. Starting in October, the Irlbach-Straßkirchen facility will supply battery systems to Munich, continuing a legacy of production that began in 1975.
BMW’s Board Member for Production, Raymond Wittmann, emphasized the importance of this investment for maintaining job security and competitive production in Germany. He highlighted that most of the 3 Series production takes place in Germany, reinforcing its commitment to local manufacturing and innovation. Over 30% of the parts sourced come from local suppliers, illustrating the significant domestic impact of this initiative.
