Smithsonian Historians Present New Perspectives on Space History at UCF
On October 1, historians from the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum introduced the “Space History Project” during a virtual panel hosted by the Students for the Exploration and Development of Space (SEDS) at UCF. This interdisciplinary initiative aims to create exhibits that celebrate the collaborative essence of space exploration, spotlighting not just major events but the countless individuals who contributed behind the scenes.
Key speakers included Margaret Weitekamp, Cathleen Lewis, and Andrew McGee, who emphasized that understanding space history requires acknowledgment of both renowned figures and the myriad lesser-known contributions. For instance, they highlighted the importance of recognizing the work of seamstresses and laborers alongside astronauts and engineers.
Sachin Saravanan, director of projects for SEDS, noted a growing interest in space studies across diverse academic fields, including biology and economics. He, along with UCF history professor Amy Foster, argued that the space program involves much more than STEM; it also relies on creativity and varied human skills.
The historians discussed the challenges of curating exhibits in a way that engages visitors with varying levels of prior knowledge. They strive to ensure that each section of an exhibit can stand alone while still contributing to a cohesive narrative. The ultimate goal is to make history more accessible and exciting through the personal stories that intertwine with significant events.
Looking ahead, significant exhibits such as NASA’s Day of Remembrance Memorial Exhibit are planned for the future, highlighting the ongoing efforts to delve deeper into space history.
