Pope Leo XIV recently addressed members of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, emphasizing the profound implications of technology and science for humanity. During their plenary assembly, he highlighted the theme “The Future of Science in a Changing World” and linked it to his encyclical, Magnifica humanitas, which examines the challenges posed by artificial intelligence, robotics, and digitalization.
He noted that while scientific advancements hold potential benefits in areas like health, energy, and agriculture, they also bring risks, including surveillance and discrimination. The Pope stressed the importance of responsible technological progress, urging that advancements be accompanied by ethical considerations.
Pope Leo XIV also called attention to the urgency of addressing climate change and its disproportionate impact on the poor. He advocated for proactive, long-term strategies rather than reactive measures following disasters, and encouraged dialogue among diverse fields and communities for effective solutions.
The Pontifical Academy, founded in 1603, comprises around 80 members from various disciplines, including many Nobel laureates. It fosters collaboration across scientific and religious boundaries to address global challenges.
