WCC Faith and Science Task Force: Reevaluating the Essence of Humanity

The Faith and Science Working Group, co-chaired by Fr Moussa Wahib and Rev. Dr. Peter Kuhnert, is actively exploring the intersection of faith with advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and genetics. Fr Moussa likens their mission to having “bread on the plate,” suggesting that they are producing meaningful work with many initiatives ahead.

The rapid evolution of AI, with significant changes occurring every six months, and the advancements in genetic technologies are key concerns for the group. They also address the social and economic implications of AI, focusing on the environmental impact of data centers, particularly in marginalized communities.

Central to their discussions is the theological concept of imago dei, or the “image of God,” found in Genesis 1:27, which emphasizes the intrinsic worth and purpose of humanity. Fr Moussa believes that while we have advanced tools unavailable to previous generations, there’s a risk of becoming so engrossed in science that we drift away from God.

Kuhnert emphasizes the importance of understanding our relationship with God in the context of these technological advances, questioning whether they serve humanity as a whole or merely individual interests. The group’s initiatives, including an online course on Faith and Genetics, reflect their commitment to integrating faith with contemporary scientific discussions.
