Cycling Star Christina Birch to Lead NASA Space Expedition

Christina Birch: From Track Cyclist to NASA Astronaut

Former track cyclist Christina Birch is set for her first spaceflight with NASA’s SpaceX Crew-14 mission, scheduled for 2027. At 39, Birch, an 11-time national champion and Team USA member, will pilot the mission alongside other astronauts to conduct scientific investigations and technology demonstrations for future moon and Mars explorations.

Athletic Achievements

Before her transition to space, Birch had an impressive cycling career, winning three World Cup medals and two gold medals at the Pan American Games. She was also part of the U.S. Olympic long team for the 2021 Tokyo Games.

Academic Background

Birch holds degrees in mathematics and biochemistry from the University of Arizona and a doctorate in biological engineering from MIT. After teaching bioengineering, she pursued competitive cycling, initially as cross-training for cyclocross.

Astronaut Training

Her astronaut training included survival exercises, underwater simulations for spacewalks, and jet flying, all while managing to participate in a marathon and the Leadville Trail 100 MTB race. She emphasized that while cycling focuses on speed, spaceflight requires preparation for potential failures.

Birch’s journey showcases her unique blend of athleticism and academic excellence, making her a pioneering figure in both sports and space exploration.
