POWER Recognizes Bloom Energy’s KR Sridhar with the 2026 Executive Leadership Award

KR Sridhar: A Visionary in On-Site Power

For nearly 25 years, KR Sridhar, founder and CEO of Bloom Energy, has championed the idea that large electricity users shouldn’t have to rely solely on the grid. Initially seen as ahead of its time, this approach has become increasingly relevant as sectors like healthcare, retail, and data centers seek stable, nearby power sources—especially with the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence.

Background and Achievements

Sridhar’s journey began in India, where he earned a mechanical engineering degree before pursuing advanced studies in nuclear and mechanical engineering in the U.S. He directed NASA-funded projects at the University of Arizona, where he worked on technologies for sustaining human life on Mars, including solid oxide technology.

Since its inception in 2001 as Ion America, Bloom Energy has achieved significant milestones:

  • 2006: Shipped its first 5-kW unit to the University of Tennessee.
  • 2008: Launched the Bloom Energy Server, with deployments at companies like Google and Walmart.
  • 2011: Completed its first microgrid project.
  • 2018: Became publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange.

In 2025, Bloom and Equinix surpassed 100 MW across 19 data centers. Additional high-profile partnerships formed, including a major deal with Oracle for up to 2.8 GW of power solutions.

Core Philosophy

Sridhar believes in the necessity of onsite power for global energy sustainability and the digital transformation. Bloom focuses on delivering clean, reliable, and affordable power solutions, eliminating the need for customers to make compromises.

For his pioneering work in distributed power solutions and his leadership at Bloom Energy, KR Sridhar received POWER’s 2026 Executive Leadership Award.
