Natural Sciences Academy to Shut Down Following Last Day on September 27 – NBC10 Philadelphia

The Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University, the oldest natural science research institution and museum in the United States, is facing imminent closure. Its final public opening is scheduled for September 27, 2026, after the announcement on September 1, 2026, citing declining attendance and rising operating costs as the reasons for its unsustainability.

Philadelphia City Council is responding by holding a special hearing on October 7, 2026, at City Hall to scrutinize the museum’s leadership and explore legal options to prevent the closure. Councilwoman Nina Ahmad emphasized the need for a stakeholder group to discuss the situation and potential solutions.

To add to the complexities, new legislation has been introduced to change zoning regulations in the area. If passed, this would restrict future use of the land, preventing its sale for commercial or industrial purposes.

Since the announcement, community members and officials have organized rallies, calling for the city and Drexel University to intervene and keep the museum operational. A rally is planned for September 26 outside the museum.

Founded in 1812 by a group of naturalists, the Academy opened its museum in 1828 to exhibit its collections. It became affiliated with Drexel University in 2011. Last year, operating hours were reduced to three days a week due to ongoing financial challenges, and Scott Cooper, the Academy’s president and CEO, has recently resigned.
