Boston Mayor Michelle Wu Endorses Governor Maura Healey

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu has publicly endorsed Governor Maura Healey’s campaign for a second term after a period of uncertainty concerning her support. The two leaders appeared together in East Boston on Thursday to highlight a $7.3 million investment that has turned Otis Elementary School into the first public school in the city to operate on 100% clean energy.

Wu expressed her gratitude for working alongside Healey, emphasizing the ongoing work needed in areas like housing, transportation, and economic development. “I’m really excited to support Gov. Healey in doing that job,” she stated.

Healey welcomed the endorsement, especially as she faces Republican challenger Mike Minogue, who has recently gained some ground in the polls. “This partnership is super important,” Healey said, recognizing the timing of Wu’s endorsement as voters begin receiving their ballots.

The endorsement marks a significant shift in Wu and Healey’s relationship; Healey had previously withheld support during Wu’s mayoral re-election campaign. Wu had even expressed reluctance to endorse Healey earlier this year, stating, “Sometimes I’m a liability, and I understand that in terms of a political endorsement.”

Despite past tensions, Wu and Healey’s alignment seems to reflect a shared agenda, particularly against shared political adversaries, including the Trump administration. Wu praised Healey’s efforts and highlighted the need for continuous collaboration between the city and state, especially during challenging times. Both leaders reiterated a commitment to addressing cost-of-living issues and making necessary investments in education and transportation.

Wu previously endorsed candidates in three state Senate races this year, but those efforts did not yield successful outcomes for her chosen candidates.
