The 49th annual Kennedy Center Honors will take place at Washington’s Capital One Arena instead of the traditional riverfront venue, which has been embroiled in a legal dispute regarding the addition of former President Donald Trump’s name to the building. The change in location was confirmed by a Kennedy Center spokesperson, although no explanation was provided for this decision.
Following a federal judge’s ruling that blocked efforts to return Trump’s name to the venue, the Kennedy Center’s board voted to close the iconic site on the Potomac waterfront. Trump has claimed that the center required safety repairs, which he stated would only proceed if his name could be added. However, legal limitations have prevented this, as Congress has specified that the center is a memorial to John F. Kennedy and prohibited naming it after anyone else.
The Kennedy Center Honors, which celebrate significant contributions to American culture through the performing arts, were established in 1978. The honorees for 2026 will be announced later, with the awards ceremony scheduled for December 7.
