Iowa State University researchers are at the forefront of developing an innovative app designed to assist farmers in recognizing pests on their properties. This application, known as Pest ID, enables users to upload images of weeds or insects for identification, alongside guidance on effective removal strategies. The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in agriculture represents a significant step forward for farming practices.

“AI is everywhere,” remarked Arti Singh, a researcher and associate professor involved in the app’s development. “If we are not embracing AI, we risk losing our ability to do things that were previously beyond our reach.”
The app has been in development for about ten years, during which researchers have trained the technology using millions of images of weeds and insects, as well as data collected by experts from Iowa State University.
One farmer, even amidst ongoing development, has already begun to notice the app’s advantages.
“This kind of avoids having to pay for an agronomist to come out and check things for you. You can do it yourself,” he noted.
In addition to reducing labor costs, the app plays a crucial role in conserving resources by identifying pests early when they are easier to manage.
“In a time when we are seeing the rise of herbicide and insecticide resistance, I believe our app can make a difference by accurately identifying these species,” Singh explained. “It offers management options rather than suggesting a broad application of one pesticide or insecticide repeatedly.”
Yet, there is still more to be accomplished.
Researchers are looking to broaden the app’s capabilities to include the identification of plant diseases, such as southern rust, that can adversely affect crops. However, the current version is already available and functional.
“This tool is going to give farmers confidence,” Singh emphasized.
The development of the Pest ID app represents a promising advancement in technology that empowers farmers and enhances agricultural practices. By integrating AI into pest management, the app not only aids in cost savings but also in sustainable farming. With ongoing improvements, it stands to further benefit the agricultural community.
