Sports Scientists Respond to McVay and the Rams’ Trip to Australia Following Myles Garrett’s Injury and Defeat

The Los Angeles Rams’ travel strategy for their season opener is coming under scrutiny following Myles Garrett’s knee injury. Tom Pelissero reported that Garrett, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year, will undergo arthroscopic surgery, placing him on injured reserve for at least four games.

Mike Sando of The Athletic noted a potential downside to the Rams arriving in Australia just over a day before facing the San Francisco 49ers. While experts acknowledged that the team handled the sleep aspect well, they warned that players could feel “heavy-legged” after such a long flight, particularly a larger player like Garrett, who struggled to perform and did not record any tackles during the game.

The Rams had a disappointing start to the season, losing 27-7 to the 49ers. After the match, Garrett expressed feeling uncharacteristic, leading to concerns from a former Cleveland Browns assistant about his commitment to the team’s preparation methods or possible underlying injuries.

The Rams are not alone in struggling in Week 1; the New England Patriots, a former Super Bowl contender, also faced a tough start. In light of their performance, the Rams may reconsider their travel approach for long journeys in the future.
