Sony has navigated legal challenges for its upcoming film about Mark Zuckerberg, titled “The Social Reckoning.” Director Aaron Sorkin revealed on The New York Times podcast, The Interview, that the studio sought rigorous legal vetting to prevent conflict with Meta’s legal team, which he interpreted as a sign of the film’s contentious subject matter.
Sorkin noted that Sony employed an outside law firm to ensure that every fact presented in the film was accurate, reflecting tensions surrounding the depiction of Zuckerberg, who remains a polarizing figure. The film is based on the fallout from the 2021 Facebook leak, where former employee Frances Haugen exposed internal documents suggesting the company’s negligence regarding user safety. The cast includes Mikey Madison as Haugen and Jeremy Strong as Zuckerberg, marking Sorkin’s second cinematic exploration of Facebook after his acclaimed 2010 film, The Social Network.
