From Spectator Stands to Social Streams: How Social Media is Transforming Game Day Attire

Sidelines to Social Feeds: How Social Media is Redefining Game Day Fashion

“What am I going to wear to the football game?” is a question that haunts many students as fall Saturdays roll around. With the rise of micro-trends on social media, Spartan Stadium is witnessing shifts in traditional game day fashion.

Many Michigan State University students are now creating content on social media platforms showcasing their “A day in the life as an MSU student” or “Get ready with me for an MSU football game.” These accounts are inspiring students and fans to experiment with their wardrobes.

Emerging Trends in Game Day Fashion

From cowboy boots and gingham boxer shorts to athletic workout sets, the landscape of game day attire is changing. Men’s fashion is evolving too, with striped bibs and MSU polos becoming popular. Accessories play a critical role in completing these outfits; chunky jewelry and hair bows are common additions.

Content creator and economics junior Amelia Orlowski expresses, “A nice hat and ribbon is probably the first thing I grab when I’m thinking of spicing up an outfit.” Her sentiment reflects a broader trend of students prioritizing individuality while incorporating popular styles.

The influence of social media, particularly TikTok, is noticeable. Interior design sophomore Elizabeth Gurski highlights that the hashtag #gamedayoutfits amassed 70,000 tags in just one week, indicating a rise in interest.

The Influence of SEC Fashion Culture

Many of these style choices are heavily influenced by the fashion culture at SEC universities like Alabama and Tennessee, known for their chic game day looks. While sundresses and game day pins haven’t fully penetrated MSU, students are clearly focusing on looking their best for the occasion.

Comfort remains a key factor. As Orlowski explains, “Having outfits that are versatile and comfortable is very important.” The unpredictable weather of fall also challenges students to be creative in their outfit choices. This shift has led to an increase in DIY projects, such as bedazzling baby tees and creating patchwork sweatshirts.

DIY Trends and Thrifting

Fans are also personalizing their outfits by reusing older MSU gear or thrifting unique items. Humanities junior Madison Laucher notes, “I’ve noticed a lot of fun face paint and students customizing their shirts by cropping them or tying them.” This behavior promotes school spirit and fosters creativity among the student body.

With the evolution of game day attire, the uniform of a simple MSU sweatshirt and jeans is being replaced with diverse and unique options. As trends come and go, exploring personal style is becoming increasingly essential for students.
