SAN ANTONIO – A recent survey conducted by CouponCabin reveals that over 70% of adults in the U.S. engage in regular exercise. Interestingly, while many fitness aficionados keep their workouts affordable—if not entirely free—there appears to be a trend of Americans spending more on fitness gear than on their actual workout routines.
The survey indicates that almost 25% of regular exercisers report spending nothing on their workouts. This group tends to favor low-cost activities such as running and walking outdoors, which require minimal financial investment.
“It’s fascinating that nearly a quarter of those who exercise regularly spend no money on it whatsoever,” says Melanie Lowe, chief savings expert at CouponCabin. “This suggests they’re engaging in activities like running and walking that are virtually cost-free.”
However, while these activities may be free, the associated gear and apparel often are not.
According to the survey data, a whopping 92% of Americans allocate funds for workout gear, clothes, and accessories. More than 63% reported spending up to $199 annually on fitness-related items, with some individuals indicating even greater expenses.
Experts caution that these costs can accumulate quickly.
“You probably don’t need a new outfit for every workout class you attend,” Lowe advises. “This can be an effective way to save money while still enjoying your exercise routine. It ultimately comes down to your personal fitness priorities and budgeting capabilities.”
One of Lowe’s biggest revelations from the survey was how little individuals actually spend on the workouts themselves, rather than the gear.
“What surprised me the most was that we’re not spending much on exercising; it’s the equipment that drains our wallets,” Lowe notes. “This suggests that it’s entirely feasible to maintain an active lifestyle without breaking the bank.”
To economize, Lowe recommends looking for discounts, sales, and cash-back offers when shopping for workout gear. For instance, CouponCabin provides cash back at more than 6,000 online stores, making it easier to find deals.
The key takeaway from the survey is clear: staying active does not have to be costly. With mindful spending, you can enjoy a fulfilling workout without straining your finances.
