Have Customers Experienced ‘Regina George’ Effects?

In recent news, a class-action lawsuit has sparked significant discussions among fans of David Protein Bars regarding the accuracy of their nutrition labels. As customers express their concerns online, TikTok has become a platform for sharing opinions and frustrations.

After a class-action lawsuit targeting the accuracy of its nutrition labels, loyal consumers of David Protein Bars are voicing their concerns on TikTok. One dedicated customer, who consumes a bar each day, created a viral video expressing her feelings of being misled by the brand.

Her comparison to the character Regina George from “Mean Girls” highlights the emotional impact of the situation. In the film, Regina is unknowingly given “bulking” protein bars while thinking they are a weight-loss product.

The video, shared by Maya Cain (@babytunechii), has reached over 1 million views. Cain starts by sharing her love for the bars:

“I absolutely adore David Protein Bars,” she states. “I subscribe to have them delivered to my apartment every two weeks.”

“That’s 12 bars every two weeks—quite a lot! I eat one daily because I enjoy them,” she continues.

However, her enthusiasm changed when she learned shocking information.

“I recently discovered that they have been misleading us about the nutrition labels,” she claims in her video. “They contain 80% more fat and 80% more calories than stated.”

She finishes with, “I will be joining the class-action lawsuit.”

What Are the Allegations?

As reported by CBS News, the lawsuit accuses David Protein Bars of misrepresenting the calorie and fat content of their products. Independent tests included in the complaint indicate that the bars may contain 83% more calories and 400% more fat than what’s stated on the label.

This discrepancy raises concerns, as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) permits a maximum accuracy deviation of 20%—anything beyond this is problematic.

Currently, the nutrition label claims that David bars contain 150 calories, 28 grams of protein, and no sugar. However, the company has rejected the allegations.

In a video shared on their official Instagram account, Dr. Mitch Culler from Epogee, the firm behind the alternative fat used in David bars, defended their labeling practices. He mentioned, “A nutrition facts panel reflects the calories your body can absorb, not merely those released upon burning the food.” This suggests that the confusion arises from differing methods of calculating calories.

He even acknowledged the “Mean Girls” comparison that many TikTok commentators referenced, saying, “It’s not October 3rd. I’m not Aaron Samuels. No one is being Regina Georged.”

Peter Rahal, CEO and co-founder of David, reiterated a similar point on X, stating, “No one is being Regina Georged. The misunderstanding stems from how we measure calories. Traditional methods like bomb calorimetry measure heat produced during burning, while nutrition labels are based on how much the human body can actually use.” He emphasized that different calculation methods are required for ingredients like fiber, sweeteners, and fat substitutes like EPG.

Additionally, David Protein and Epogee are facing another controversy related to claims that they may be restricting supply to other food manufacturers following David’s acquisition of the alternative fat producer.

Community Reactions

Comment sections on these posts reveal that some viewers were not surprised by the issues surrounding the protein bar’s nutrition labeling.

“As a dietitian, I’ve studied food science, and nothing about the macros of David bars ever made sense,” one comment read. “I feel so validated right now!”

Another user took a different view, saying, “Just think about the silver lining: you were unknowingly consuming that much extra every day and it worked out fine! You could continue or switch to something more calorically dense to enjoy!”

“An 80% miscalculation is insane,” noted another commentator.
