On Tuesday, the Defense Department (DOD) introduced an innovative tool that enables its personnel to create custom artificial intelligence (AI) assistants without any coding skills.
During the Trump administration, the DOD underwent a rebranding, becoming known as the War Department.
The new tool, named “Agent Designer,” will operate on the department’s GenAI.mil platform. It is being integrated with Google’s Gemini AI technologies, as outlined in an announcement from the Pentagon’s chief technology officer’s office.
This launch enables approximately 3 million Pentagon employees to “create their own custom AI assistants to automate tasks and optimize complex workflows, all without any prior coding experience.”
“These customized agents can handle multi-step tasks, pull in various data sources, and be shared with teams for immediate use,” the announcement indicated.
This new capability is part of a larger initiative by the Pentagon aimed at accelerating the adoption of AI tools for both military operations and administrative tasks. Since its launch in December, GenAI.mil has emerged as the preferred generative AI platform for various military services as leaders strive to integrate AI into everyday functions.
According to the CTO’s office, operators can effortlessly generate after-action reports, analysts can create memos by synthesizing CUI images, and financial officers can develop applications to analyze budgetary data.
“From logistics to strategy, Agent Designer equips you to create the necessary tools for enhanced efficiency,” the announcement stated.
Several prebuilt agents are already offered within Gemini to facilitate common workflows, according to the office.
Alongside Google’s Gemini technologies, the DOD intends to incorporate capabilities from OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, as well as Elon Musk’s AI venture xAI, known for its Grok model, into the GenAI.mil platform.
It remains uncertain whether Agent Designer will also integrate with these additional technologies.
