Setting Realistic Fitness Goals: How to Turn Resolutions into Lasting Habits
As the New Year approaches, many individuals set fitness resolutions with the hope of transforming their health and well-being. However, sticking to these resolutions can prove to be quite challenging. Research indicates that about 95% of New Year’s resolutions relate to fitness, yet the average individual maintains their commitment for only 3.7 months. In Lincoln, Nebraska, this trend is no different.
Liza Mendoza-House, the owner of LP Fitness Transformative Center, notes that January 1st is her busiest day due to the surge in motivation as people reflect on their lives and aspirations. Throughout this month, several Nebraskans shared their fitness goals, and months later, three of them reported that they are successfully continuing their journeys.
Focus on Nutrition and Consistency
Erinn Criner has concentrated on integrating healthier foods into her diet alongside her workout routine. “My focus has been on nutrition and staying consistent with my workouts. I’ve really honed in on my nutrition, ensuring I fuel my body properly to enhance my performance at the gym,” she explained.
Meanwhile, Becky Benedict emphasized accountability in her fitness journey. “I’ve committed to working out 4-5 times every week, and I manage my nutrition by logging my meals in MyFitnessPal and collaborating with my accountability coach,” she said.
Cathy Martinez entered the New Year with the goal of losing 15 pounds and involving her family in fitness activities. However, she admitted that nutrition posed the greatest challenge. “Even though I attend the gym six days a week, I struggle with making healthy food choices due to my busy schedule. Eating out is often more convenient, which doesn’t help my nutrition,” she shared, adding that she has successfully lost 4 pounds and has encouraged her family to adopt healthier habits.
Martinez’s journey took a significant turn five years ago when she was diagnosed with terminal kidney cancer. “That diagnosis changed my perspective on life. Given that I’m still here, it was time for me to return to the gym and take my health more seriously,” she reflected.
The Power of Community Support
Participants who have managed to stay on track with their fitness resolutions attribute much of their success to the support of their community. One gym member described their experience, stating, “The entire gym feels like a family, filled with care and support.” Another echoed this sentiment, emphasizing how motivating and uplifting the environment is for those seeking to achieve their fitness goals.
Conclusion
While maintaining motivation can be a struggle for many, the overall trend shows an increasing number of people committing to active lifestyles. Whether you are just starting your fitness journey or looking to rekindle your enthusiasm, remember the importance of setting realistic goals, holding yourself accountable, and surrounding yourself with a supportive community. With the right mindset and resources, your New Year’s resolutions can evolve into lasting habits that contribute to a healthier and happier life.
