Meta Unveils AI Tools to Detect Scammer Messages

On Wednesday, Meta announced the introduction of a comprehensive set of tools aimed at combating scams prevalent in today’s social media, including platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, and Messenger. This initiative seeks to address ongoing fraud issues such as the worrying trend of individuals being deceived by counterfeit celebrity profiles. According to Meta, over 159 million scam advertisements were eliminated in 2025.

The recent scams heavily rely on AI-generated content to create fake profiles and even fake websites. In response, Meta is utilizing its own AI technologies to enhance user safety.

WhatsApp Alerts

Meta

First in line is WhatsApp, a widely used messaging platform often targeted by scammers due to its ability to link mobile devices swiftly. Once scammers gain access to an account, they can impersonate the user, leading friends and family to be easily misled. In the previous year, Meta removed nearly 7 million accounts associated with such scams.

Scammers may initially pretend to be relatives, vendors, service providers, or popular content creators, soliciting personal information through requests for phone numbers to share linking codes or QR codes that users may activate impulsively.

WhatsApp will now monitor requests from unlinked accounts for unusual patterns, such as those coming from unfamiliar countries. If such a case is detected, the platform will prompt an additional pop-up warning, giving users a momentary pause to evaluate the situation before proceeding.

Facebook and Messenger Alerts

Facebook is also enhancing its scam detection methods by introducing alerts when users attempt to add or engage with suspicious accounts. Although Meta has not disclosed all the indicators it considers suspicious, it does utilize patterns such as unusual geographical locations.

Users will also receive notifications when encountering accounts they or their friends have never interacted with before. Facebook will provide context alongside its alerts, which may include information that an account was created only days prior, prior to user confirmation.

The Messenger app will implement a similar feature that monitors user interactions for indications of scam activity. Meta specifically highlighted job scams, where scammers promote unrealistic or exceedingly lucrative jobs to extract personal details or direct victims to phishing sites.

Phishing websites are on the rise and are becoming increasingly convincing, often deceiving even savvy users aware of such threats. The ease of generating a fake webpage and imitating genuine brand logos, thanks to generative AI technology, contributes to the growing risks.

Meta claims to leverage its own AI tools to more effectively identify and filter out scam-related content. This encompasses analyzing Messenger conversation histories, detecting counterfeit images impersonating celebrities, and recognizing unusual mentions of well-known public figures. The AI tools are also programmed to uncover phishing attempts across the platform.

However, the introduction of these AI tools has raised privacy concerns. While Meta asserts that they are designed to examine user activity for signs of fraud, specifics on data handling and storage remain undisclosed. Previous controversies surrounding Meta’s AI initiatives highlight the necessity for transparency and robust privacy protections when implementing these technologies on personal messaging services.

The exact timeline for when these new tools will be accessible to all users has not been announced by Meta.
