Microsoft is collaborating with Anthropic to incorporate Claude Co-work into its 365 co-pilot platform. This partnership is designed to enhance productivity in Microsoft applications, facilitating tasks like creating Excel spreadsheets and organizing meetings using AI. Dan Halle interviewed Microsoft’s president of Business Apps and Agents to discuss the implications of this collaboration for the company’s AI strategy. Listen in for more insights.

Transformation of Co-Pilot Features

What we’ve achieved is a shift in Co-pilot from being mainly a chat-based tool, which focused on question-and-answer interactions and email drafting, to a more action-oriented assistant. Now, it handles tasks such as sending emails, creating documents, and updating schedules—all in close collaboration with Anthropic.

Integration with Microsoft 365

How does this actually work? We’ve witnessed how Co-work and Anthropic can perform automated tasks independently. What kind of tasks can users expect Microsoft 365 to manage?

01:21
Charles Lamanna

One key aspect is that Co-pilot Co-work integrates seamlessly with all Microsoft 365 applications, utilizing the data you have stored within these tools. We refer to this as Work IQ. Its cloud-based functionality means you don’t need to run it locally; you can simply close your laptop and let it work on your tasks.

Streamlining Tasks with Co-Pilot

For instance, if I receive numerous emails or need to set up a meeting and prepare a presentation, I can simply instruct Co-pilot Co-work to create the presentation and schedule the meeting. Meanwhile, I can take a break—like grabbing a cup of coffee.

02:22
Charles Lamanna

Exactly! If you can envision the task being delegated to someone else, it can likely be assigned to Co-work. Users have noted that they can manage multiple tasks concurrently. So, it’s not just about generating one presentation or scheduling one meeting; you can have several tasks running simultaneously in the background.

Adoption Rates Among Enterprises

Dan Halle

What has been the response from enterprises regarding these AI solutions? Microsoft has integrated Co-pilot within 365, allowing operations across various applications like Word and Outlook. What has adoption looked like for enterprise users?

03:20
Charles Lamanna

We’ve been very pleased with the response. Over the past year, we’ve observed a tenfold increase in daily active users for M365 Co-pilot, with 90% of Fortune 500 companies utilizing it. Clearly, we are in an exciting phase of rapid adoption for these tools in the workplace.

Exploring Multiple AI Models

03:45
Dan Halle

When people think of Microsoft and AI, they may predominantly think of OpenAI, given your collaboration with them. However, now there’s a partnership with Anthropic. What does this signify for Microsoft? Does it indicate a shift toward utilizing more models? What might that entail?

04:13
Charles Lamanna

Our primary focus is to adopt a multi-model approach, employing the appropriate AI model for each specific task. For instance, within M365 Co-pilot, we have an auto-router that selects between an OpenAI model or an Anthropic model depending on the context. The real innovation occurs when these models are combined with your Office data—what we define as Work IQ.

Flexibility in Model Selection

04:47
Dan Halle

Can users, when navigating on their own, select whether they want to use OpenAI or Anthropic models, or is that decided by the auto-routing?

05:03
Charles Lamanna

Users can indeed select from a dropdown menu. However, we recommend using the auto-selection feature, since the optimal model for a task may vary over time. The best model for creating a spreadsheet in March might differ from what’s ideal in April.

Future of Productivity and AI Tools

05:22
Dan Halle

Given the rapid pace of development in AI technologies, where do you see Microsoft heading with these agents and productivity capabilities?

06:04
Charles Lamanna

We envision that AI agents will become ubiquitous in work environments. A significant part of today’s announcements included agent functionalities in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Not only can users ask questions, but these agents can also update formulas, reorganize tables, and even generate pivot tables. We anticipate that features like Co-pilot Co-work will soon be integral across various applications, setting new expectations for AI tools.

AI’s Integration into Microsoft 365

06:33
Dan Halle

As we characterize Microsoft 365, it has become synonymous with tools such as Office. Will AI be regarded as an essential element of this suite, as fundamental as Word or Excel?

07:07
Charles Lamanna

Absolutely! Microsoft 365 comprises Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Co-Pilot; this will be the new landscape of modern office productivity.

What Does This Mean for Workers?

Dan Halle, joining me now to break down this insightful interview. As an office worker, what advantages does Co-pilot bring? How does it simplify your daily tasks?

07:46
Dan Halle

The tool is designed to automate numerous tedious daily tasks that can consume valuable time. For instance, you can instruct it to prepare a presentation for a meeting and also send invitations to team members. The beauty is that it can execute multiple tasks simultaneously. You can delegate various tasks and let it handle everything. While parts of this functionality were previously discussed in Anthropic’s releases, the Co-work feature is certainly a significant enhancement.

AI’s Impact on Software Evolution

Why did Microsoft partner with Anthropic instead of relying solely on their AI models?

09:39
Dan Halle

While Microsoft has its own AI capabilities, it recognizes that Anthropic is one of the most advanced AI labs. Moreover, they already have a significant partnership with OpenAI. Microsoft is strategically diversifying its AI offerings to ensure flexibility and capability for various tasks across different platforms, making it prudent not to rely exclusively on one partner.

The Bigger Picture for Investors

Speaker C

In light of recent fluctuations, some investors have raised concerns about returning on AI investments. Does the growth in Co-pilot usage mitigate these worries?

11:39
Dan Halle

To some extent, yes. Investors are eager for consistent improvement in performance. This initiative aims to bolster Microsoft’s cloud revenue, which is crucial for ongoing growth. It’s a timely boost following a natural slowdown in growth rates. Co-pilot brings in additional monthly revenue per user, re-energizing growth trajectories. The focus remains on maintaining that upward trend, especially as competition in AI escalates among major players like Amazon and Google.

In summary, Microsoft’s partnership with Anthropic not only enhances the functionality of its software suite but also represents a significant step towards integrating AI seamlessly into the workplace. As AI continues to evolve, we can expect these innovations to shape the future of productivity, making tasks easier and more efficient for users around the globe. The ongoing collaboration between technological giants ensures a promising future for AI-driven applications across various sectors.
