Google Introduces Gemini-Powered Tools for Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive

Google is launching a series of Gemini updates across its
Workspace applications. These enhancements empower the AI assistant to craft initial drafts in Docs, build comprehensive spreadsheets in Sheets, create presentations in Slides, and respond to inquiries about files in Drive. The rollout began on March 10, initially available in beta for
Google AI Ultra and Pro subscribers, as well as Gemini Alpha business customers. These features are currently limited to English users.

The “Help me create” tool in Docs generates a formatted first draft by extracting context from Drive, Gmail, Chat, and the web in response to user prompts. Additionally, Gemini can emulate the writing style or formatting of a reference document. Google notes that over a third of new Docs arise from duplicates of existing files; this tool aims to minimize unnecessary manual work. In Sheets, Gemini now has the capability to construct entire spreadsheets from natural language prompts, leveraging data from user files and emails, as well as Google Chat and web sources.

The “Fill with Gemini” feature automatically populates table cells, with Google claiming it is nine times quicker than manual data entry, based on a study involving 95 participants (though it’s wise to consider these findings critically). Sheets also incorporates optimization tools, powered by Google DeepMind and Google Research, enabling users to solve challenges such as employee scheduling through written queries. In Slides, Gemini can produce individual slides that align with the theme of an existing presentation, with full presentation generation from a single prompt expected in the future.

Google Drive is also enhancing its features, introducing
AI Overviews in search functionalities, akin to a feature recently added to Gmail, which includes a new “Ask Gemini” tool allowing users to inquire about files, emails, and calendar events. However, the Drive updates will initially be available only to customers in the US, differing from the broader rollout of other features.

In conclusion, Google’s latest Gemini updates are set to transform the Workspace experience, allowing users to leverage AI in various aspects of document creation, data organization, and project management. With these advancements, users can expect a more streamlined and efficient workflow, significantly enhancing productivity.
