Netflix is enhancing its commitment to innovation in filmmaking through a recent acquisition aimed at equipping creators with cutting-edge tools.
WASHINGTON — Netflix has officially acquired InterPositive, a pioneering artificial intelligence filmmaking technology company founded by actor and director Ben Affleck, as the streaming giant announced. The terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
Based in Los Angeles, InterPositive has created AI-driven tools designed to assist filmmakers throughout both production and postproduction phases. Following the acquisition, the entire 16-member InterPositive team will join Netflix, with Affleck taking on the role of a senior advisor.
In a video that accompanied the announcement, Affleck explained that the technology enables filmmakers to generate AI models utilizing footage from their own projects, facilitating the completion or modification of shots.
“You can use your own model to remove wires from stunts, reframe a shot, capture missed scenes, adjust lighting, and enhance backgrounds,” Affleck elaborated.
Emphasizing the system’s purpose, Affleck stated that it is designed to support creatives rather than to generate content independently.
“It’s not about text-prompting or creating something out of nothing,” he noted. “People often think of AI as a tool to generate movies from mere words typed into a computer. That’s not the essence of this technology.”
Netflix executives expressed that this technology aligns perfectly with the company’s vision for artificial intelligence.
“Our approach to AI has always focused on meaningfully serving the needs of the creative community and our subscribers,” stated Elizabeth Stone, Netflix’s chief product and technology officer. “The InterPositive team is joining us because we share a belief that innovation should empower storytellers rather than replace them.”
Netflix plans to provide these tools to its creative partners without any intention of commercializing the technology.
Bela Bajaria, Netflix’s chief content officer, emphasized the company’s perspective on technology as a means of enhancing creative expression.
“We believe that new tools should enhance creative freedom, not limit it or replace the work of writers, directors, actors, and crews,” Bajaria asserted. “Ben and his team at InterPositive represent a long-standing tradition in our industry of artists leading the charge in storytelling innovation. Their work aims to provide filmmakers with more choices, greater control, and better protection for their visions.”
This acquisition marks the latest collaboration between Netflix and Affleck. Earlier this week, Affleck and Matt Damon’s production company, Artists Equity, signed a multi-year partnership with Netflix to develop and distribute upcoming streaming projects.
In summary, Netflix’s acquisition of InterPositive signifies a bold step in blending technology with creative filmmaking, offering unprecedented tools to enhance the artistic process. This collaboration underscores the platform’s ongoing commitment to empowering filmmakers and enriching storytelling.
