Doctors Warn Against Vitamin D Supplements

Warning on Excessive Vitamin D Intake

Healthcare professionals are sounding the alarm for individuals consuming high doses of vitamin D.

Vitamin D is widely recognized for its numerous health benefits. It plays a crucial role in the growth and development of bones and teeth and has been shown to lower the risk of certain diseases.

Recent studies indicate that adequate vitamin D levels may lessen the risk of multiple sclerosis, decrease the likelihood of heart disease, and reduce the chances of severe illnesses.

Moreover, vitamin D supports immune health, with individuals who have suboptimal levels being potentially more susceptible to infections and autoimmune conditions.

While it’s essential to maintain adequate vitamin D levels, experts caution against the serious risks that can arise from overdosing on this vitamin.

A troubling case detailed in a BMJ Case Report described a middle-aged man who required hospitalization due to excessive vitamin D intake.

The patient presented with alarming symptoms including vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps, leg cramps, tinnitus, dry mouth, dehydration, diarrhea, and weight loss.

These symptoms persisted for three months, emerging approximately four weeks after he began increasing his vitamin D supplements.

The man had several pre-existing health conditions, including tuberculosis, a benign ear tumor that caused hearing loss, hydrocephalus, bacterial meningitis, and chronic sinusitis.

The report revealed that he was taking more than 20 supplements daily, including vitamin D at a staggering 150,000 IU, along with vitamin K2, vitamin C, vitamin B9, vitamin B2, vitamin B6, and omega-3 fatty acids at 2000 mg twice daily.

Despite halting his supplement intake when symptoms began, he continued to experience health issues and sought medical attention.

Blood tests indicated dangerously high calcium levels and a vitamin D concentration seven times above the recommended maximum.

Kidney function tests indicated acute kidney injury, while scans ruled out serious conditions such as cancer.

“There is a rising global trend of hypervitaminosis D, characterized by elevated serum vitamin D3 levels,” the authors noted.

“Due to its extended half-life of approximately two months, symptoms of vitamin D toxicity can linger for weeks.

“This case emphasizes the potential dangers associated with supplements, which are generally regarded as safe unless taken in excessive amounts or harmful combinations.”

After spending eight days in the hospital, the patient continued to show elevated vitamin D levels even two months after his discharge.

The report warns that symptoms of hypervitaminosis D can include drowsiness, confusion, apathy, psychosis, depression, stupor, coma, appetite loss, abdominal pain, vomiting, constipation, peptic ulcers, pancreatitis, high blood pressure, irregular heart rhythms, and kidney problems.
