  • A recent review of clinical research indicates that collagen supplements may yield slight enhancements in skin elasticity, hydration, and dermal density.
  • Experts note that these effects are often subtle and occur gradually, usually after several weeks of consistent use.
  • There is little evidence suggesting that collagen supplements can prevent or significantly reverse wrinkles, contrary to popular marketing claims.
  • Skin experts recommend that collagen supplements complement proven strategies like sunscreen application, retinoids, and healthy lifestyle choices to effectively support skin health.

As people seek to combat aging and enhance their skin’s appearance, collagen supplements have gained immense popularity.

Nonetheless, a recent review of scientific studies suggests that these supplements may provide only limited benefits for skin health, particularly in terms of elasticity and hydration.

Multiple trials indicate that consistent supplementation correlates with minor improvements in skin elasticity, hydration, and dermal density, generally after several weeks of use.

This raises the question: How effective are collagen supplements for enhancing skin health and mitigating visible signs of aging?

To answer this, Healthline consulted with experts about the purported benefits of collagen and the validity of common claims regarding supplements.

Marlee Bruno, a board-certified physician associate and aesthetic medicine educator at Mind Body & Soul Medical, stated that the review aligns with her observations in the clinic.

“Collagen supplements may encourage improvements in skin elasticity and hydration over time, but they are not a magic solution for aging,” she told Healthline.

“My patients who have realistic expectations tend to be the most satisfied. Those who hope for dramatic wrinkle reversal from a supplement alone often leave disappointed,” she noted.

According to Bruno, current evidence indicates that collagen supplements can lead to slight improvements in skin quality when taken consistently, but these changes are generally subtle and gradual.

If you are consistently consuming collagen supplements, Bruno highlighted that the proven benefits relate to three key aspects of skin quality: elasticity, hydration, and dermal density.

“Some medical trials suggest that a daily intake of 2.5 to 5 grams of bioactive collagen peptides can enhance skin elasticity after 8 to 12 weeks,” she explained.

Dr. Moustafa Mourad, a double board-certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon, affirmed that the most consistent advantages include enhanced skin hydration and slight increases in elasticity.

“Individuals who benefit from collagen supplements may observe their skin becoming slightly more hydrated or feeling firmer,” he told Healthline.

“Such changes typically manifest after several weeks of daily use. It’s important to understand that these improvements are minor and gradual—not the dramatic lifting or tightening that is often anticipated from cosmetic treatments,” he cautioned.

Bruno concurred, stating that individuals should not expect miraculous transformations. “What you can hope for is subtle firmness and a smoother texture,” she advised.

“Think of it as high-quality insulation for a house. You might not notice it from the outside, but it helps the house retain warmth and withstand external factors,” she continued.

Bruno emphasized that collagen is better suited for long-term support than for immediate, visible changes.

A common assertion is that collagen supplements can prevent or drastically reduce wrinkles; experts warn that this claim is exaggerated.

“Collagen supplements do not prevent wrinkles like sunscreen does with UV damage,” Bruno explained. “Aging is influenced by factors including UV damage, genetics, inflammation, and hormonal changes,” she noted.

“While collagen can help soften the appearance of existing wrinkles, for optimal results you must also practice sun protection. No amount of collagen supplementation will prevent wrinkles without it,” she elaborated.

Mourad agreed, asserting that many claims surrounding collagen and wrinkles are overstated.

“Wrinkles arise due to various factors, including sun exposure, natural collagen depletion with age, repetitive facial movements, and significant structural changes in the skin,” he highlighted.

“Given these complexities, collagen supplements alone cannot prevent or dramatically reverse wrinkles. At best, they may assist in maintaining skin hydration and elasticity, making very fine lines appear a bit softer,” Bruno explained.

If your goal is to enhance skin elasticity and postpone signs of aging, a multifaceted approach is advisable.

“I always explain to patients that while supplements can support skin health from the inside out, they are most effective when paired with a comprehensive strategy incorporating medical-grade skincare, healthy lifestyle choices, and, when suitable, in-office aesthetic treatments,” Bruno advised.

“UV exposure is responsible for about 80% of visible skin aging, breaking down collagen more quickly than anything else,” she said.

Moreover, Bruno recommends utilizing medical-grade retinoids to boost cellular turnover and incorporating antioxidants, such as vitamin C, to combat oxidative stress.

“For more measurable results beyond what supplements offer, consider in-office treatments that stimulate collagen, like microneedling,” she suggested.

Mourad emphasized the importance of fundamental health practices. “Always prioritize overall health through balanced nutrition, sufficient sleep, and avoiding smoking, as these factors significantly impact skin quality and aging,” he said.

“Collagen supplements can certainly be included if desired, but they should be viewed as a complement to established strategies, not as a replacement,” he concluded.
