AI in 45: Utilizing AI in the Classroom: Effective Strategies to Enhance Learning While Preserving the Role of Educators
This engaging session invites faculty from City Colleges to discover practical, ethical, and accessible methods for integrating Generative AI into their teaching practices. Instead of supplanting traditional instruction, Generative AI is positioned as a supplementary resource for instructional design, student engagement, feedback, and accessibility. Participants will examine how AI can aid in lesson planning, generate discussion prompts, simplify complex concepts, and develop learning supports aligned with Universal Design for Learning (UDL), all while upholding academic integrity.
Attendees will participate in interactive activities with tools like ChatGPT to reimagine classroom assignments, craft student-facing prompts, and establish guidelines for the responsible use of AI in their curricula. The session will also address prevalent concerns among faculty, such as the potential for student misuse of AI and strategies for establishing clear communication of expectations.
Professor Yasi teaches Child Development at Kennedy-King College. Her extensive background includes teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) and Developmental English courses, as well as working as a preschool teacher in international schools in Singapore for 15 years. Her interest in AI began during her ESL teaching experience, where she observed students utilizing AI tools to support their writing. Instead of discouraging this practice, Professor Yasi embraced the opportunity to explore how AI could be harnessed effectively and ethically to enhance the learning experience.
In conclusion, the thoughtful integration of Generative AI in educational settings serves as a powerful tool to augment teaching practices while preserving the essential role of educators. By equipping faculty with the knowledge and strategies to use AI responsibly, we can foster a richer, more engaging learning environment for all students.
