City Council greenlights funding to support businesses in construction areas

The Tucson City Council has launched a new initiative called “Ready, Steady, Open,” allocating $345,000 from the American Rescue Plan to support small businesses affected by construction projects. Due to the disruptive nature of city construction, some businesses, particularly along Grant Road, have faced closures, prompting the need for this program.

Starting October 1, businesses located on select roads—such as South 12th Road, Grant Road, and Houghton Road—can apply for three types of grants:

  1. Readiness Grant: Up to $500 for preparation before construction starts.
  2. Stabilization Grant: Up to $10,000 to help businesses operate during construction.
  3. Recovery Grant: Up to $5,000 to assist with recovery following construction.

Eligibility is restricted to businesses with fewer than 25 employees that have been operational for at least six months in affected areas. Notably, liquor stores, smoke shops, and adult entertainment establishments are excluded from participation. The program will run for one year, with possible extensions based on its effectiveness. Grant applications will be open for one month, with disbursements starting in December.
