Google Search has introduced Canvas, a new AI planning tool, across the United States, as the company announced on Wednesday. Canvas serves as a versatile project management tool, which can be particularly useful for tasks like planning trips. Users can access Canvas directly from the AI Mode interface at the top of their Google Search results page.
The tool seamlessly integrates into AI Mode and is compatible with both desktop and mobile devices, including smartphones and tablets. However, due to its design that opens a second screen next to the main chat window, it can be a bit more challenging to use on smartphones, necessitating toggling between screens.
Going Anywhere? Perhaps College?
One of the key features of Canvas is its ability to facilitate trip planning, allowing users to monitor and manage information related to flights, accommodations, and more in real time.
“Canvas simplifies the creation of tailored travel plans by aggregating real-time search data for flights and hotels, as well as insights from Google Maps including photos and reviews,” a Google representative said to CNET.
Additionally, Canvas can serve as a useful tool for tracking academic scholarships, keeping users informed about monetary amounts and deadlines.
“The introduction of Canvas into AI Mode marks an evolution in Google’s approach, transforming Google Search from a simple discovery engine into a comprehensive productivity workspace,” explains Dave McCarthy, the research vice president at IDC’s Worldwide Infrastructure Research.
Project Planning with AI
To start using Canvas, navigate to the AI Mode screen in Google and select the Canvas option from the plus sign located on the left side of the text entry box.
Once you click on the Canvas button, a side panel will open for your project. Here, you can enhance your project with standard chat prompts. Users even have the option to view the underlying code and customize the Canvas interface, such as switching to a dark mode.
“Projects within Canvas are automatically saved in a user’s AI Mode history. While this feature is handy for ongoing tasks, users should exercise caution regarding the information they input, as it forms part of their overall Search and AI activity,” McCarthy warns.
Rose Yao, vice president of product for Google Search, shared a post on X on Wednesday that showcased a video of a summer camp project organized for her children. Canvas created an interactive dashboard that categorizes camp options by expenses, distance, and focus area.
“We’re also introducing support for coding and creative writing activities, allowing users to bring their ideas to life with customized dashboards or interactive tools,” Yao revealed in her post.
Canvas was initially announced by Google for AI Mode in July 2025, and it subsequently expanded its travel capabilities later in the year.
Currently, there is no information available from Google regarding plans to expand Canvas to additional languages or countries.
