Sensorial Textures in K-Beauty Skin Care Products

One of the fundamental aspects of K-beauty is its focus on texture. From rich puddings and vibrant sherbet masks to capsule creams that burst upon application, Korean skin care formulas emphasize a delightful sensorial experience, making the routine both engaging and enjoyable.

The Rise of K-Beauty

Recent trends indicate that the United States has overtaken China as the leading market for K-beauty products, as reported by Accio, an AI-driven market research company. This growth has been largely driven by viral TikTok trends, which have brought Korean skin care to the forefront. “We are witnessing what I like to call the ‘Second Wave of K-beauty,’” explains Sarah Chung Park, founder and CEO of Landing International and the creator of K-Beauty World. “The first wave, which started in 2011, introduced the world to the wonders of Korean beauty products—ranging from snail mucin to charming lip balms. However, it often lacked longevity in the marketplace.”

Park continues, “The current wave is fundamentally different. Korea is now recognized globally as a hub for research and development in skin care, pioneering breakthrough ingredients like PDRN [salmon DNA], exosomes, and EGF. The country is also innovating new product formats, such as overnight collagen masks, which didn’t exist before. At the same time, the global popularity of K-pop, K-dramas, and Korean cuisine has made Korean culture widely embraced and integrated into everyday life. Today’s brands are creating products with this cultural context in mind. While many countries are experiencing a slowdown in skin-care product launches, Korea continues to see a rise in new offerings in the U.S. This ‘second wave’ exemplifies science, sophistication, and a lasting impact, proving that K-beauty is more than a mere trend—it’s a movement of global innovation.”

Embracing Sensory Experiences

Consumers today are increasingly drawn to sensorial experiences, and Park suggests that K-beauty’s fascination with texture is reflective of Korea’s creative spirit. “At its essence, Koreans have a playful approach, which naturally extends into beauty,” she states. “There is even a concept known as ‘skintertainment,’ referring to skin care that entertains while delivering effective results. Korean consumers expect products to not only perform well but also to feel delightful, pushing brands to continuously innovate. K-beauty has long embraced this philosophy: high efficacy paired with high pleasure.”
