A study published online in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal Open Forum highlights that collagen’s benefits for skin elasticity and hydration are gradual, necessitating consistent intake. The authors suggest that collagen should not be treated as an “anti-wrinkle solution,” but rather as essential support for those engaged in comprehensive skin care.
The research analyzed over 100 randomized controlled trials involving nearly 8,000 participants.
Collagen, a type of protein, is produced by the body and can also be found in various dietary sources. Recently, oral and topical wellness products containing collagen have gained popularity.
The authors of the study highlight that collagen plays multiple crucial roles in the body, including the support of skin cells, organ protection, and aiding blood clotting. As we age, collagen levels naturally decline, prompting many to seek supplementation to maintain its health benefits.
Their findings indicate that collagen supplementation can positively impact various aspects of skin, bone, and muscle health.
Specifically, the research found that collagen supplementation was linked to improvements in musculoskeletal health and conditions such as osteoarthritis.
Improvements in musculoskeletal health were characterized by enhanced strength and better muscle and tendon structure. For osteoarthritis, participants reported decreased pain and stiffness.
However, regarding skin health, the study did not show significant changes in skin roughness. Instead, collagen appears to enhance skin “turgor, tone, and moisture” rather than directly addressing surface texture.
Findings regarding the influence of collagen supplementation on oral health and cardiometabolic health were inconclusive.
