According to a study published in BMC Oral Health, participants who used a Manuka honey-based oral rinse three times a day showed significantly better results compared to those who gargled with traditional honey.

“Manuka honey stands out in clinical research due to its significantly higher levels of MGO (methylglyoxal), providing this honey with more robust and consistent antibacterial properties,” she explained to GB News.

When it comes to proven health benefits, wound healing takes precedence. The honey accelerates wound closure while preventing bacterial infections.

“Manuka improves wound closure and minimizes bacterial infections, which is why it is used in clinical dressings within our NHS,” she added, providing practical advice on usage and strength.

“A teaspoon taken 30 minutes before meals, twice a day, is recommended,” she suggested.

How to Choose the Right Manuka Honey?

Liliana emphasized the importance of selecting the appropriate MGO grade based on individual needs.

“For general daily use when you are healthy, a lower grade, such as 100 MGO, is sufficient. If you’re feeling unwell or notice the onset of a sore throat, it’s better to opt for a grade of 300 or 525 MGO; the higher the grade, the stronger the antibacterial effect,” she explained.

In addition to alleviating dry mouth, this honey has shown effectiveness in reducing dental plaque and oral bacteria, as well as providing soothing relief for sore throats and the severity of coughs.

Studies featured in JMIR Publications suggest that Manuka honey could aid in managing functional dyspepsia, a common digestive issue characterized by bloating, nausea, and overall discomfort.
