Cultural heritage faces destruction due to conflict, prompting a demand for justice.

The Aliph Foundation, established in Geneva in 2017, has been instrumental in safeguarding cultural heritage, especially in Ukraine amidst ongoing conflict. Alexandra Fiebig, a project manager with Aliph, highlights their support by providing millions in funding to help Ukrainian museums relocate valuable artifacts to safety. This effort includes the deployment of “heritage ambulances”—specialized vehicles equipped to assist in the preservation and transport of art and cultural items.

Similarly, Blue Shield International operates in conflict zones, collaborating with armed forces and local heritage officials, earning the nickname “Red Cross for culture.” Dr. Emma Cunliffe, the organization’s head of operations, emphasizes the bravery of Ukrainians as they document damage to their cultural heritage, often at great personal risk.

This dedication to cultural preservation isn’t unique to Ukraine; other conflicts, such as the actions of Isis in 2015, have seen civilians and organizations strive to protect their cultural heritage amid widespread destruction. In Mosul, fighters not only attacked ancient statues but also devastated public libraries, destroying countless books and manuscripts integral to the city’s history.
