Artificial intelligence (AI) has increasingly integrated into our daily lives, including the realm of art. Opinions surrounding its role in creative fields vary widely, making it essential to gather insights from professionals. Chris Beaty, an art professor at NCC, shared his perspectives on the influence of AI on the art world.
Value of Art
“I don’t believe AI will diminish the value of human-created art. In fact, it may enhance the worth of original pieces due to the rarity of the human story behind them,” Beaty stated. “As more artworks can be generated by machines, people may increasingly value the tangible object and the artist’s unique touch.”
Occupation Concerns
There are growing concerns about the potential for AI to replace jobs in artistic fields, such as graphic design. Many also ponder how AI will reshape the art community as we know it. While some see AI as a beneficial tool for artistic expression, others fear it could lead to a complete overhaul of traditional practices.
“AI will surely alter the landscape of graphic design, but I don’t foresee it replacing human designers. Its efficiency in generating rapid variations is impressive, yet it cannot replicate creative judgment, concept development, or an understanding of a client’s needs. Designers who thrive will be those who adapt to and embrace AI as a helpful tool,” Beaty noted.
Perceptions of Art
Art is interpreted differently by each individual, and the introduction of AI only amplifies this diversity of opinion, sometimes resulting in starkly contrasting views.
“As images become easier to produce, questions arise: ‘Who created this?’ and ‘Why?’ Conversely, this accessibility may broaden what people define as art since more individuals can create visually captivating works,” he explained.
Threats of AI
An article from the BBC in October 2024 highlighted that when photography was first invented, it was regarded as a threat to traditional artistry, labeled as “the mortal enemy of the art establishment.” Yet, over time, photography emerged as a vital movement within the artistic community. The evolution of AI is now prompting similar comparisons.
“I believe the trajectory will be akin to photography’s journey. At first, it was viewed as a threat, destined to spell the ‘end’ of painting, but it ended up fueling a significant art movement, while painting continues to thrive. AI, too, will cause disruption but will expand creative horizons. What sets it apart is its speed; AI is advancing far quicker than photography did,” Beaty stated.
Intentionality Behind AI Art
Art is inherently subjective, and opinions regarding AI as a legitimate form of art vary widely.
“AI-generated images can certainly be interpreted as art; they can possess beauty, evoke emotions, and convey meaning. However, the crucial distinction lies in intentionality. Art involves the human thought process behind its creation,” Beaty remarked. “AI simply lacks that lived experience. Without that human touch, AI-generated works may struggle to captivate. For instance, as a painter, I often find value in ‘mistakes’ during my creative process, an instinct that AI cannot replicate.”
Evolution through AI
The potential for AI to evolve the world of art sparks an ongoing debate about its implications.
“AI is a tool, inherently neutral—it’s not inherently ‘good’ or ‘bad.’ It can introduce innovative methods for creation and problem-solving, while also prompting us to reassess what we cherish about human-made art. Given the rapid pace of AI development, the artistic landscape could transform in unforeseen ways, and my perspectives may shift accordingly,” Beaty shared. “We’re all navigating this evolution together, but I remain cautiously optimistic.”
