Navigating the digital landscape can be challenging, especially with countless distractions vying for our attention. If you’ve managed to stay focused thus far, that’s commendable! The digital world constantly pulls our focus away from our tasks, making productivity a significant challenge.

Writing this piece took longer than expected, primarily due to an unexpected dive down a Wikipedia rabbit hole during my workday. It’s easy to see how our attention can easily be diverted. So, what might aid in combatting these distractions? Recently, various focus and anti-distraction tools have emerged, aiming to help us regain our concentration in an economy valued at over $7 trillion in the United States alone.
Investing in Attention
- Focus Friend offers a gamified pomodoro timer featuring an animated bean that encourages users to remain focused as it knits socks while they work. Rated as Google’s best app of 2025, it costs $1.99 per month and can block distracting apps.
- The internet sensation Brick is a device and accompanying app priced at $59, transforming smartphones into “dumb” phones by limiting access to certain applications. To unblock apps, users must tap their phone against a designated physical tile, which should be kept at home.
- There’s a wide array of distraction blockers available, including Freedom ($3.33+/month), Cold Turkey ($39), and Opal (around $20/month).
Ironically, addressing a technology-induced problem with more technology seems counterintuitive. Yet, many of these tools have gained immense popularity and, according to user reviews, they appear to be quite effective.
However, these solutions do have their limitations, particularly concerning context.
The New Contender
Enter Fomi, an AI-driven macOS app priced at $8 per month, which distinguishes itself from others in the market, as noted by Wired.
- Rather than merely blocking websites and applications, Fomi engages by asking what you are working on, then assesses your screen activity to determine if your actions are productive or distracting.
- For instance, while Reddit can often be distracting, it can also serve as a resource for research. Traditional focus apps would block the site entirely, but Fomi intelligently contextualizes the relevance of specific threads to your work.
- If it detects that you’re veering off task, a bright red tomato appears on your screen along with a personalized message urging you to refocus — think of it as a gentle nudge from an AI overseer.
While there are valid privacy concerns due to the system sending screenshots of your desktop to a cloud-based AI model, if you’re seeking guidance to improve your focus and miss having someone to keep you accountable, Fomi might be the perfect solution to enhance your productivity.
