US Utilities Receive Poor Marks on Clean Energy Shift

The Sierra Club’s latest “Dirty Truth Report” reveals that major U.S. utilities are regressing on their transition from fossil fuels to clean energy. Over 40% have weakened their climate commitments since the second Trump administration began. The report grades 76 of the largest electric utilities with an overall F, indicating a failure to reduce carbon emissions since the first report in 2021.

Key findings include:

– Utilities plan to close only 25% of their coal capacity by 2030, a decrease from 35% reported in 2023.
– New plans for solar and wind energy have dropped significantly, covering only 25% of expected fossil fuel generation and demand by 2035.
– A worrying trend emerged this year as the volume of new clean energy projects decreased for the first time since the report’s inception.

Emma Pabst from the Sierra Club highlighted that utilities are prioritizing fossil fuel investments, driven by higher profits from infrastructure investments, resulting in increased electricity bills for consumers. The Trump administration’s policies have also obstructed the development of clean energy projects.

Despite the challenges, there remains an opportunity for utilities to pivot towards renewable energy, requiring pressure from state regulators to shift away from fossil fuels.
