- Intestinal Barrier Function: Markers such as zonulin decreased, especially in participants with higher BMI, indicating enhanced intestinal barrier integrity.
- Microbial Composition: Both groups saw an increase in beneficial bacteria like Lactobacillus, with overall microbiome diversity stable. However, PBP2 led to more pronounced changes in microbial communities.
- Metabolic Changes: Higher indole levels and lower tryptophan correlated with reductions in zonulin, suggesting a link between microbial metabolism and gut barrier functionality.
Conclusion
Both probiotic–phytonutrient blends improved bowel function and were associated with beneficial changes in gut metabolites, highlighting the potential for microbiome-mediated metabolic modulation to enhance intestinal health. Further research with larger sample sizes is recommended to confirm these findings.
