January Retail Sales Surge Fueled by New Year’s Sports Supplement Purchases

In recent discussions about the current economic climate, experts have expressed mixed feelings regarding consumer spending trends. While there has been a noted monthly increase, some observers urge caution when interpreting these figures.

Hewson pointed out that the monthly rise in sales should be regarded with “a big pinch of salt,” referencing ONS data that indicates only a 0.1% growth in sales volumes over the three months leading up to January, compared to the previous three months ending in October 2025.

“It’s evident that consumers are still facing considerable pressure and are making complex decisions about where to allocate their funds,” she remarked.

Additionally, fresh data from the ONS revealed that unemployment reached a near five-year high by the end of last year, coinciding with a deceleration in wage growth, which fell to 4.2%.

On a more positive note, Paul Dales, chief UK economist at Capital Economics, highlighted the boost in sales of sports supplements, suggesting that the annual “new year resolution health-kick” is giving the economy a seemingly healthier appearance.

“However, with employment growth remaining sluggish and wage increases tapering off, households may struggle to sustain the current pace of spending,” he cautioned.
