Hampden Senior Fitness Class Sees Surge in Attendance

Staying Active in Your Golden Years: Senior Fitness at the Skehan Recreation Center

In Hampden, Maine, the Skehan Recreation Center has become a vibrant hub for seniors eager to stay fit and active. Each week, the center hosts a dynamic fitness class specially designed for older adults, providing an excellent opportunity for exercise and social interaction.

Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m., physical therapist Dana Tardif leads participants through a well-structured class. Starting with a warm-up to get the heart pumping, the session transitions into weight training, followed by core exercises and concludes with a cool-down phase.

Launched in 2000, this fitness initiative has experienced significant growth over the years. What initially drew six participants has now expanded to an impressive average of 70 to 90 attendees each year, a testament to the increasing interest in senior fitness. The class is supported by the Hampden Rec Committee, underscoring the community’s commitment to promoting health and wellness.

“As we age, maintaining physical fitness becomes crucial,” says committee member and class participant Steve Brown. “The hardest part is simply getting out the door. Once you make it to class, you’re already succeeding.”

Among the long-time attendees is 96-year-old Malcolm MacDuffie from Newburgh, who has been active in the program for 23 years. “My wife and I have always prioritized staying active,” he shares. “My last job involved walking 11 miles a day, so this class has been a great way to keep moving.”

The class focuses on various exercises aimed at enhancing balance, mobility, and overall strength. “The goal is to improve reflexes and body control,” Tardif explains. “As we age, fear of falling becomes prevalent, so we help participants develop the skills to maintain their balance, should they ever stumble.”

Interestingly, Tardif notes that beyond the physical benefits, the social aspect of the class plays a vital role in participants’ lives. “Socialization is a significant component of this program,” he observes.

Susan Hall, a local resident, expresses how both she and her husband Bill have made new friends through the class, welcoming many individuals from surrounding areas. This community connection not only fosters friendships but also encourages a supportive atmosphere where participants genuinely care for one another.

Judy Faust, another long-time participant from Winterport, emphasizes the importance of keeping in touch. “If someone hasn’t been around for a while, many of us will check in to make sure they’re okay,” she states. “It’s all part of looking out for each other.”

The class is accessible for just $2 per session, making it a convenient option for all seniors, regardless of residency.
