In today’s digital age, maintaining anonymity online is becoming increasingly challenging. Recent advancements in artificial intelligence are significantly enhancing the capability to identify writers based on their text, which undermines the veil of anonymity for many internet users. Kelsey Piper, a tech writer, tested this phenomenon by having Claude Opus 4.7 analyze unpublished 150-word excerpts of her work; the AI consistently identified her as the author. Tom Chivers from Semafor achieved similar results when using a passage from his 2019 book. While some other models struggled to do so, it is noteworthy that Claude was unable to correctly identify writers with no published work under their real names; however, this may change soon. Piper warns that, “If you leave a detailed anonymous review on Glassdoor after leaving your job, companies might soon be able to input that text into an AI and determine exactly who wrote it… your anonymity isn’t long for the world.”
