Study Links Sugary Drinks to Anxiety in Youth

A recent study by researchers at Bournemouth University has revealed a link between the consumption of high-sugar beverages and anxiety symptoms among young individuals. This finding underscores possible mental health repercussions that extend beyond the widely acknowledged physical health effects.

The research was led by Dr. Karim Khaled, a former PhD student at Bournemouth University, who is now affiliated with the Lebanese American University in Beirut.

Dr. Chloe Casey, a lecturer in nutrition and co-author of the study, commented on the findings: “With rising concerns concerning adolescent nutrition, most public health campaigns have focused primarily on the physical ramifications of unhealthy dietary habits, such as obesity and type 2 diabetes.”

“In contrast, the mental health implications associated with diet have received considerably less attention, especially regarding energy-dense, nutrient-poor drinks.”

The study, published in the Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics, synthesized data from several studies investigating adolescent diets and mental health.

Consistently, the study found a correlation between high intake of sugary drinks and increased anxiety symptoms. However, researchers warned that these studies do not establish causality, as anxiety could also drive higher consumption of sugary beverages.

Dr. Casey further stated, “Our research has highlighted an unhealthy association between sugary drink intake and anxiety disorders among youth. Given the recent surge in anxiety disorders in adolescents, recognizing lifestyle habits that can be modified is essential to mitigate the ongoing trend.”
