Renowned musician and frontman of Mumford & Sons, Marcus Mumford, faced a turning point in his life when he weighed 110kg. The pressures of a dynamic touring lifestyle had begun to take their toll, leaving him feeling disconnected from his body and self-image.

Over the years, Mumford embraced small, impactful changes and practiced self-compassion, ultimately shedding 30kg, bringing him to a healthier 80kg. This renewed focus on his health ignited an impressive revival, as Mumford & Sons launched two albums in just a year after a five-year hiatus. His latest work, Prizefighter, exemplifies his commitment to a healthier and more vibrant life.

Today, whether balancing family time, touring, or seeking creative inspiration, Mumford puts his health and fitness at the forefront of his lifestyle. Here are the key changes that helped him regain control and find balance.


Men’s Health: What does fitness mean to you?

Marcus Mumford: It has become a vital aspect of my life. With 100 shows scheduled last year and the same this year, I realized that this job demands physicality. I decided to approach it like an athletic training program rather than just a party as it was in the past.

In the past year, I’ve taken my fitness seriously and concentrated on my training. During the Covid pandemic, I started jogging and making healthier lifestyle choices, resulting in losing 30kg. The physical demands of live performances require good cardio fitness, and running has played a significant role in that. A friend introduced me to strength training, which I have found enjoyable.

MH: How do you manage your training while on tour?

MM: We travel with a portable gym, which has been a game changer for my mental well-being. It’s now part of my daily routine, and several crew members also enjoy exercising with me. We often organize friendly football matches, which add an element of fun to our fitness activities.

MH: Have you noticed improvements in your performances now that you prioritize fitness?

MM: Absolutely. My vocal coach mentioned that regular cardiovascular exercise supports vocal performance by helping to clear mucus buildup. As my overall fitness improves, so does my vocal stamina and energy levels during shows. I’ve certainly felt a difference.

MH: What led you to pursue this fitness journey?

MM: One day, I looked in the mirror and thought, ‘I need to take control of my life.’ I consulted with a doctor friend who offered actionable steps to regain that control. Now, I feel empowered to manage my body and its impact on my mental health. It’s essential to be gentle with yourself if life interrupts your exercise plans, adapting to whatever your week demands.

MH: It’s about understanding what you need daily to feel good, right?

MM: Exactly. My perspective on rewards has shifted. Previously, I felt rewarded by indulging in ice cream, but now I find joy in running outside. Engaging in fitness has enabled me to enjoy other activities without injury. For instance, my recent surfing experience was exhilarating—I was able to tackle waves that I previously struggled with, and it’s all thanks to my fitness focus.

MH: Do you have any specific fitness goals going forward?

MM: In the past, I participated in marathons, but they took a toll on my knees, prompting me to focus on strength training instead. A friend and I are discussing climbing a mountain this year—yet to finalize the details. Setting physical goals keeps me motivated, and I’d love to tackle something unusual or slightly daring.
