Celebrating Resilience and Empowerment in Beauty Education
In honor of Black History Month, the Ray-Con Beauty Academy is making a significant impact in Lexington, Kentucky. As the first Black-owned cosmetology school in the region, it is not only teaching beauty techniques but also empowering students to venture into entrepreneurship. Founded by Connie Mosley Goree, whose impressive career spans over three decades, the academy stands out for its commitment to nurturing the next generation of beauty professionals.
Located centrally in Lexington, the academy adopts a distinctive educational approach. Goree emphasizes, “We’re teaching the book way, we’re teaching the state board way, but I also want to incorporate other things for them, where they don’t have to pay for those classes. They will already be professional enough to know how to take those classes. Be whatever you want to be. If you want to be a makeup artist, incorporate that into your business.” This philosophy allows students to not just acquire technical skills but also gain the confidence to excel in their chosen paths.
Goree’s vision was fueled by her personal journey and the desire to give back to the community that supported her. “I’ve been an owner for over 38 years. I’ve also been an educator for the last 15 years of my career. I took sick with cancer and didn’t think I was ever going to stand behind the chair again,” she shared. Her journey through adversity—battling cancer multiple times—has shaped her mission at Ray-Con Beauty Academy.
Growing up in Eastern Kentucky and facing a life-threatening illness at a young age, Goree’s story is one of resilience and determination. Despite her struggles, including a stage 4 cancer diagnosis, she remained focused on her dream of establishing her own beauty academy. “That journey for me is ongoing, and I fight every day. It just teaches me to not stop here, just continue going on,” she said.
At Ray-Con, students benefit from a nurturing environment where they can ask questions and seek guidance. “It’s a small group of us; we really can ask everything we want to know, and if we need help with anything, she’s always there to help,” shared student Genevieve Parker. Fellow student Karma Silaer noted, “One thing I learned is to not give up… Miss Connie has helped me feel like I have somebody to support me.”
Goree’s background as a special needs educator enhances her mentorship, allowing her to bond with her students on a deeper level. Reflecting on her journey, she acknowledges the divine purpose she feels in her work. “I knew God has a purpose for me… If He took my breath right now, I’ve lived my purpose,” she stated confidently.
Officially opened last month after a two-year process with the cosmetology board, Ray-Con Beauty Academy represents a transformative milestone in the community. Its mission to blend education with entrepreneurship reflects the school’s commitment to shaping not only skilled professionals but also confident individuals ready to make their mark in the beauty industry.
