NSA’s Controversial Use of Mythos AI Tool

The integration of advanced artificial intelligence tools into national security operations is gaining traction, reflecting the growing significance of AI in defense strategies. Recent reports indicate that the United States National Security Agency (NSA) has embraced Anthropic’s Mythos Preview AI tool, even amidst concerns flagged by the Pentagon regarding the company’s supply-chain risks, as outlined by Axios on Sunday.

According to sources mentioned by Axios, the utilization of the Mythos Preview within the NSA appears to be on the rise. Efforts to confirm this information through Reuters were unsuccessful, as neither Anthropic, the NSA, nor the Department of Defense responded to inquiries made outside of standard working hours. It’s important to note that the NSA functions as a part of the Department of Defense.

In a noteworthy development last week, the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump engaged in discussions with Anthropic’s CEO, marking the first joint conversation since prior disagreements arose between the Pentagon and the AI firm regarding deployment strategies for their models. These discussions come at a time when there are increasing apprehensions that the advanced capabilities of the latest Mythos model could potentially bolster cyberattack strategies due to its sophisticated coding and self-operational features.
