Empowering Youth Through Boxing: A Community Fitness Hub
In the vibrant atmosphere of Kolmarge Harris’ boxing gym, the air is alive with sounds: gloves thumping against pads, jump ropes hitting the floor, and passionate instructions resonating throughout the space. However, for Harris, the mission transcends the sport of boxing itself. Now in its fourth year, Mt. Pleasant Boxing and Fitness has emerged as a valuable resource for youth across Isabella County. From aspiring multi-sport athletes honing their skills to young individuals seeking direction and discipline, Harris is dedicated to guiding them through life’s challenges using the principles of boxing.
“My story can inspire others because it helped me,” Harris notes. “When faced with obstacles, I want our youth to understand that they can keep pushing forward even when others say no.”
Harris’ vision is to revive the boxing legacy in Mount Pleasant, a town with a rich history in the sport. “Boxing thrived in the area over 20 years ago, especially on the reservation, but it faded away,” he recalls. “I felt it was time to take up the challenge and bring it back.”
Community and cooperation are core values for Harris. “People need to work together and support each other. I’m committed to fostering this sense of togetherness,” he asserts. He emphasizes that while boxing may seem aggressive on the surface, the training it entails fosters not just physical strength but also personal development.
“Boxing has motivated me, strengthened me, and helped me maintain focus in every aspect of my life,” Harris explains. “You don’t have to step into the ring to benefit from it—training in boxing enhances cardio, conditioning, and footwork, which can help elevate performance in football, basketball, wrestling, or any other sport.”
At Mt. Pleasant Boxing and Fitness, sessions run Monday through Thursday, combining conditioning exercises with skill training. Harris has intentionally set the membership cost at $50 per month to make it accessible to everyone. “I want everyone to have a chance. I’m strict, but I’m fair, and I enjoy spending time with the kids,” he says, a testament to his dedication.
Harris’ passion for teaching stems from his lifelong relationship with boxing, which began at the tender age of five. After years in amateur boxing, he turned professional for 21 years, meeting countless individuals along the way and gaining valuable life skills that shaped his future. “Boxing opened doors for me that I never would have accessed otherwise,” he shares.
However, Harris knows that many of the youth he trains face challenges beyond athletics—issues like bullying, personal struggles, and a lack of discipline. His role extends into mentorship, providing a safe space where young people can talk openly. “When you invest in kids by taking the time to listen, they respond positively,” he emphasizes. “Respect is gained through communication, and I’m here because boxing saved my life. Now, I’m dedicated to giving back.”
Looking to the future, Harris has bigger dreams for the gym. He aims to develop it into a comprehensive youth facility, akin to a Boys and Girls Club, offering not just training but also mentorship, tutoring, and essential resources. “I want this space to be a sanctuary for underprivileged children where they can receive support with education and technology, which is increasingly important,” he explains, also welcoming the inclusion of adult programs.
Four years into this journey, Mt. Pleasant Boxing and Fitness has evolved into much more than just a training facility. It has become a nurturing environment where young individuals can learn, gain respect, and build trust while growing both as athletes and people.
Conclusion: In a world where challenges are abundant, Harris’ gym stands as a beacon of hope and empowerment for youth. By fostering physical fitness and personal growth through boxing, he is not only shaping stronger athletes but also cultivating responsible, resilient individuals. Whether you’re a parent hesitant about the sport or an aspiring athlete, boxing can be a transformative tool for everyone, encouraging discipline, confidence, and community spirit.
