Grand Illusion Cinema Finds a New Home
The Grand Illusion Cinema, a beloved single-screen theater in Seattle’s University District for over 50 years, is set to return to the area after closing its previous location in January 2025. The theater has announced plans to take over the Varsity Theatre, which closed earlier this year, with hopes of reopening by late November or early December. The new venue features three screens, allowing for daily movie showings.
Brian Alter, the executive director of Grand Illusion, expressed excitement about the move, emphasizing the historical significance of movie theaters in the University District, which once boasted 16 screens. With the Varsity closure, Alter noted a “total absence” of theaters in the area.
The choice of the Varsity was also strategic; it offers a 10-year lease with options for renewal, providing stability for future planning. This aspect was crucial as the team seeks a long-term home rather than a transient one.
Alter remarked, “Having the three screens totally frees us up,” allowing for diverse programming and potential rentals. The new venue’s setup enables them to showcase a wider variety of films, from independent projects to popular cult hits.
While some renovations will take place, the mission of providing adventurous programming will remain unchanged. They plan to install a 4K laser projector and retain 35mm projectors, alongside a fundraiser aiming to raise $200,000 for enhancements.
Above all, Alter encourages community support, noting the importance of ticket sales in sustaining the nonprofit, which relies on volunteers for operations.
