She Moves: New WSU Student Organization Fostering Sisterhood through Fitness

Empowering Fitness: She Moves Organization Promotes Self-Love through Pilates

The newly established Wayne State organization, She Moves, recently hosted a 30-minute Pilates session, focusing on self-love, body movement, and positive affirmations. This engaging event took place last Friday and attracted 16 participants, all donned in various shades of pink athletic wear in celebration of Valentine’s Day.

At the conclusion of the session, attendees enjoyed pinwheel sandwiches and fruit while sharing affirmations and taking photos together, reinforcing the community’s bond.

Co-president Alay’sia Mayes expressed that She Moves was created to foster inclusivity among women kickstarting their fitness journeys. “It’s really about building a sense of community and sisterhood,” she stated. “Women often face challenges in supporting one another, especially in fitness environments, and we aim to change that by cultivating a positive space where everyone feels comfortable and empowered to pursue personal growth.”

Mayes emphasized the expectations for new members, saying, “All we ask is for them to be authentic. Just keep showing up, put in the effort to improve, and allow this organization to enrich their lives. Support and love are what truly matter.”

Serena Fort, a WSU student and participant at the event, shared how she discovered She Moves at Winter Fest and became eager to join. “I appreciate that it’s a women-only space; I sometimes feel intimidated at the gym, so this is comforting.”

The organization’s founder, Nasya Irvin, explained that she launched She Moves this semester after initiating her own fitness journey two years ago. “I noticed many women in the gym feeling lost, and I always wanted to help, but I understand that some are shy,” she reflected. “The essence of this event was about loving oneself and showing up for each other.”

Irvin shared that the organization plans to organize weekly workouts, targeting different muscle groups at each session. As she prepares to graduate next year, she aims to carry on the organization’s legacy and extend its reach throughout the Metro Detroit community. “I want to ensure it continues after I graduate. Additionally, I’m planning to start a nonprofit called Limitless, which will focus on young Black women through sports and community engagement,” she revealed.

The “Love Letter to You” Pilates session was led by fitness instructor Jai Wafford, who also announced plans to open a Pilates studio in Garden City this summer. Participants are encouraged to connect with her on Instagram at @mattepilates.us.
