ByteDance’s Response to Intellectual Property Concerns
ByteDance is taking significant measures to enhance safeguards for its Seedance 2.0 video generation tool, following backlash over potential intellectual property (IP) violations, as announced on Sunday. The company, known for its popular platform TikTok, is under scrutiny for its AI model’s use of copyrighted material.
The uproar involves allegations that ByteDance utilized copyrighted content to train its artificial intelligence systems, resulting in an influx of videos featuring Hollywood celebrities and iconic figures from Disney, including Marvel and Star Wars characters.
On Saturday, Disney issued a cease-and-desist letter, accusing ByteDance of conducting a “virtual smash-and-grab of Disney’s IP.” Sources indicated that Seedance 2.0 is capable of creating videos showcasing Disney-owned characters, which has led to significant legal concerns.
This legal action follows adverse reactions from major Hollywood organizations. The actors’ union SAG-AFTRA has condemned the new model for “blatant infringement,” while Charles Rivkin, CEO of the Motion Picture Association, urged ByteDance to “immediately cease its infringing activity.” Responses from the union and association remain pending.
In light of these developments, ByteDance stated, “We respect intellectual property rights, and we have acknowledged the concerns surrounding Seedance 2.0.” The company confirmed it is actively working to fortify existing safeguards to prevent unauthorized use of intellectual property and likenesses by users.
It’s worth noting that Disney had previously sent a similar cease-and-desist letter to Google last December, which led the tech giant to limit the creation of Disney-related characters in its AI services, Nano Banana and Gemini.
